Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
