Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers During Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews entered the house close to Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female got detained at the scene and one more individual who fled subsequent to the blast was apprehended shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area displayed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, explained the property was subject to an removal notice due to debts accrued by the three owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member set off the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed the media.
A propane tank had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the interior minister said.
Casualties and Damage
Those injured by the explosion included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.
He thought the explosion had occurred on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
Community Reaction
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed local news, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
