Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the early candidates under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League season.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous associations to the team - are part of the names to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would create a potential hurdle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the club directors as they begin the process of appointing a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise candidate, although he would be a surprising choice given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means the club would not need to pay any compensation.
