Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised leaders in various fields.
