Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP scored 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a positive start.

Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.

But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points, was instrumental together with the game's hero.

"Grit and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander said of their showing. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, good luck or misfortune. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."

Prior to the game, the team's title banner was raised at their arena, while the players were awarded their championship rings.

Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.

The Pacers will have the opportunity to secure some early revenge on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to stop his current team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Miami's star scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

The Lakers were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
