Tuchel Questions Wembley Crowd Support Despite Dominant Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his regret that the Three Lions team did not receive greater encouragement from the Wembley crowd during their impressive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday night.
Tuchel was pleased to see his squad maintain their good form, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the match. However, he was displeased with the energy at the national stadium.
“With one and a half sessions to prepare against a organized team and we excelled,” the coach commented. “It could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth ones. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get support from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you provide in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them escape. When you only hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s sad because the squad earned better encouragement today.”
“I maintain this statement. There’s nothing more than being 3-0 in a derby. I would have wished for a little more support in moments where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to refocus, but that’s the way it went and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Justified by Performance
Away from risking a fight with fans, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by omitting Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. Yet the choice was justified by Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and netting his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel noted. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his position.”
Bellamy Hopes for Lessons from Loss
The Wales manager expressed hope that his team, who face Belgium in a key qualifying match on next week, improve after their poor performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I wanted this friendly,” Bellamy stated. “I wanted to assess our standing. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? Today gives me motivation.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Watkins was substituted at the break after colliding with a goalpost and may miss out when the national team play their next opponents in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
