British government has added an additional eleven further destinations to its public advisory list concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated beverages.

The revised warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the number of confirmed occurrences" of methanol toxicity.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, following a number of serious events such as the deadly demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Methanol is a poisonous chemical typically utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not meant for human consumption.

While it is naturally produced during the creation of beverages, reputable manufacturers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the purification method.

Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.

Authorities' Guidance for Travelers

Government official the minister said that every traveler should recognize the indicators of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"When you are drinking spirits abroad, choose well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," the official warned.

"Should anything seems unusual, for example a hangover that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."

The complete roster of destinations identified as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
